摘要: In these talks, we present expositions on studies of the gravitational equilibrium of uniformly rotating homogeneous masses— idealized models of rotating stars such as white dwarfs and neutron stars, which are examples of final stages in stellar evolution. Our focus is on the existence of such equilibria.
For the incompressible model, there is a long and distinguished history, with classical contributions by Newton, Maclaurin, Jacobi, Liouville, Riemann, and Poincaré. In contrast, compressible models of uniformly rotating stars remained largely unexplored until about 35 years ago.
In addition to reviewing previous results, we will also present some new findings on compressible models, obtained in joint work with Alessio Figalli.
