Medical image registration benefits significantly from deep learning, yet existing approaches often lack physical explainability and fine-grained deformation control. Motivated by Demons algorithms, we propose a novel DrivenMorph framework that bridges attention mechanism and variational image registration by using differential modeling as an interpretable, physics-informed driven force. This driven force, derived from local differences in the latent feature space, serves as transparent guidance for the registration process. It directly drives the registration process through a neural Demons layer that simulates force-displacement interactions to generate smooth and anatomically consistent deformation. Unlike previous methods, our approach not only integrates traditional registration principles with popular deep networks, providing an explainable and efficient solution for learning-based medical image registration, but also separates difference modeling from deformation, improving modularity and explainability. Extensive experiments on multiple 3D brain MRI datasets demonstrate superior performance over state-of-the-art learning-based and optimization-based methods. Furthermore, visualizations and statistical analyses confirm that the learned driving force aligns closely with actual deformation patterns, supporting its explanatory value.

张建平,男,理学博士,教授,博士生导师,于 2013 年 2 月加入湘潭大学数学与计算科学学院教师团队。先后获得湘潭大学“数学与应用数学”专业学士学位、大连理工大学“计算数学”专业博士学位;在香港城市大学电脑科学系、利物浦大学数学系做过一年 Research Assistant 和三年 Research Associate 博士后工作。长期致力于计算机视觉及图像处理中的数学问题、机器学习、深度学习及其应用方面的研究,相应成果以第一作者或通讯作者发表在SIAM J.Imaging Sci.、SIAM J.Numer.Anal.、IEEE TGRS、IEEE JBHI、IEEE TCI、J Comput.Phys.等国际重要刊物上;主持完成国家自然科学基金青年、面上项目及省部级项目多项;作为主要骨干成员或子课题负责人参与科技部遥感重大项目、湖南省科技厅重大应用基础研究与成果转化及产业化医学项目、湖南省科技厅高新技术发展及产业重点研发项目、湖南省科技厅"社会发展领域重点研发项目"、国家自然科学基金与省部级项目近 10 项。现为湘潭大学韶峰学者"学术骨干"、湘潭大学优秀研究生导师团队和湖南省优秀研究生导师团队成员等。
