The goal of this talk is to sketch a proof of the equivalence of two drastically different-looking closed 3-manifold invariants: Heegaard Floer homology (due to Ozsvath-Szabo) and embedded contact homology (due to Hutchings). If time permits I will say a few words about the equivalence of the two theories for sutured 3-manifolds. This is joint work with Vincent Colin and Paolo Ghiggini.
