Skein module is an invariant of 3-manifolds, which was introduced by Jozef Przytycki and Vladimir Turaev independently around 1990. Since its discovery, a lot of work has been done on the theory itself and related topics. In this talk, we will give the definitions of the Kauffman bracket skein modules and skein algebras together with some examples and basic properties. Then, we will talk about a connection between the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of a surface times interval and the SL(2,C) character variety of the fundamental group of the surface.
