In this talk, we present two results concerning the stability of monotone shear flows in the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. In the first result, assuming that the shear flow remains spectrally stable for all time, we establish a nonlinear asymptotic stability result. In the second result, we demonstrate that this spectral assumption is indeed necessary for asymptotic stability: we construct a shear flow that is initially spectrally stable but evolves into a spectrally unstable state due to the influence of viscous dissipation. These results are based on joint works with Weiren Zhao.
