A group is left-orderable if its elements admit a total order invariant under left multiplication. For fundamental groups of 3-manifolds, this algebraic property has striking connections to 3-manifold topology, most notably through the L-space conjecture. In this talk, we will survey current techniques for establishing left-orderability, with particular emphasis on their connections to foliations and flows on 3-manifolds.
