Since Reynolds's experiments in 1883, hydrodynamic stability at high Reynolds number has always been an important and very active field in the fluid mechanics. This field is mainly concerned with how the laminar flows become unstable and transition to turbulence. To understand this transition mechanism, an important open question proposed by Trefethen et al(Science 1993) is to study the transition threshold for laminar flows, which is concerned with how much disturbance will lead to the instability of the flow and the dependence of disturbance on the Reynolds number. In this talk, I will introduce recent important progress on transition threshold problem for the Couette flow and Kolmogorov flow. It has been showed that 3-D lift-up, boundary layer, inviscid damping and enhanced dissipation have played an important role for the hydrodynamic stability.
