This is a general introduction to Lyapunov exponents and spectral analysis of ergodic Schrodinger operators. We will talk about how three different areas, dynamical systems, spectral theory, and mathematical physics, interact via the dynamical object Lyapunov exponent. If time permits, I will introduce some recent joint work with Avila and Damanik on positivity and large deviations of the Lyapunov exponent for potentials generated by hyperbolic dynamics.
